確定肉兔的初配年齡，主要根據(jù)體重和月齡來(lái)決定，在正常飼養(yǎng)管理?xiàng)l件下，公母兔體重達(dá)到該品種標(biāo)準(zhǔn)體重的70%時(shí)，即已達(dá)到體成熟，可開(kāi)始配種繁殖。一般小型品種初配年齡為4-5月齡，體重2.5-3千克。中型品種為5-6月齡，體重3.5-4千克。大型品種為7-8月齡，體重4.5-6千克。因公兔性成熟年齡比母兔遲，所以公兔的初配年齡應(yīng)比母兔遲1個(gè)月左右。為了防止早配和近親交配，在家兔性成熟前應(yīng)公母分開(kāi)飼養(yǎng)。
